In Castrop-Rauxel, the US company Rain Carbon has built a plant that produces special hydrocarbon resins. They are used in food packaging, baby diapers and in the adhesives industry. Thanks to its strategically favorable location, Rain Carbon is aiming to appeal to European customers, who until now have had to import such resins from Asia, among other places.

Major international corporations such as Evonik, Quiagen, UCB and Bayer, which are based in NRW, use biotechnology for pharmaceutical and chemical processes, among other things. In addition, dynamic, medium-sized companies have specialized in biotech solutions. AiCuris, Xell, Paion or Biofrontera are among the more than 100 companies in NRW focusing on biotechnology.

Efficient isolation of antibodies

Dalex Biotech from the Bonn-Sieg district has set itself the task of optimizing the process for isolating proteins such as antibodies. The production of proteins creates unwanted foreign substances that have to be separated, which is time-consuming and cost-intensive. The founders of Dalex Biotech have therefore developed a method that reduces the time required for protein isolation to between ten and fifteen minutes. In addition, the materials are proving to be extremely stable, which in turn enables lower process costs due to high reusability.

BioSciences GmbH

Groundbreaking molecular mapping of cells

Resolve BioSciences GmbH, a company based in Monheim am Rhein, develops solutions in the field of molecular cartography. This is a spatial analysis technology that enables scientists to resolve biological challenges in areas such as neuroscience, oncology and infectious disease. For example, a human cell can be mapped in all its small components and any disruptive factors can be better detected and eradicated.

Mane Biotech

A full head of hair thanks to regenerative medicine

Mane Biotech, a start-up based in Cologne, Germany, concerns itself with the issue of hair loss. The company has developed a wearable device that reactivates hair growth and claims to completely stop hair loss in people with androgenetic alopecia. The device stimulates the scalp's stem cells to become active and regenerate themselves.
