Düsseldorf region–Mettmann district: Global player and innovation hub on the Rhine

The Düsseldorf-Mettmann region is a strong and vibrant economic area with a high quality of life and a diverse character: the Rhine metropolis and state capital Düsseldorf, a major regional center with international flair, and the Mettmann district, a strong regional partner that is home to numerous skilled workers and offers a wide range of recreational and leisure opportunities in its ten constituent towns. What unites the region is a long history of cooperation and diverse functional interconnections.

The region is home to more than one million inhabitants. Over 70,000 people commute daily between Düsseldorf and the Mettmann district. Within a one-hour drive, there are also 11.6 million inhabitants and approximately 500,000 businesses.

Life sciences, steel research and the startup scene on the Rhine

As a shared functional area with numerous points of contact and synergies, the Düsseldorf-Mettmann region is constantly working on the further development and institutionalization of regional cooperation. The region acts as a bridge between the Rhine corridor, the Bergisches Land region, and the Ruhr area, and is integrated into a dense regional network of partners.

The state capital region is part of the Rhine-Ruhr metropolitan region and is one of NRW's innovation drivers. Companies in this innovation hub occupy top positions in patent intensity, technological networking, and product innovation. Centers of excellence exist in the state capital region in the life sciences and steel research. Furthermore, it is one of the most important startup hotspots in NRW. Within the state of NRW, stakeholders in the state capital region are closely networked with scientific institutions in the Rhine-Ruhr region, the Rhenish mining area, and the Ruhr region.

Internationality is highly valued in the region. It is home to numerous large German and international companies. In particular, multinational corporations maintain their European and German headquarters here. But the region is also attractive to international specialists and managers – not only because of the many international companies, but also because of the high quality of life: According to many international rankings, it is one of the most popular expat destinations worldwide.

The Düsseldorf-Mettmann Regional Management is tasked with guiding and proactively shaping the development of the state capital region within a network of complex stakeholder and functional relationships. It acts as a facilitator, ensuring that the various stakeholders collaborate to secure the region's future. Promoting innovation and supporting structural change are among its key areas of focus.
